How To Tell If A Pump Is Broken

How do you know if you need to replace the air conditioning vacuum pumps? Is there a foolproof way to check if they are doing their job. I really do not want to go to a repair shop and have some guy take two seconds to tell me what I can figure out for myself. Then again if it is a drawn out procedure that takes a special tool, I need to just go to the shop. I guess I could call, then see if they would tell me the symptoms of a pump failure. Then I will know if it is a self diagnosis or not.
