Wondering What Executor Duties Are Before We Assign One

My husband and I have been working on getting some things tied up such as our wills and our estate. We are still young but we would rather be prepared and not need to be, than have something happen and not be prepared. So, we are wondering what executor duties are before we assign one. We want to know what exactly this person will have to do, and how much control they will have over things. We have a few people in mind, but want to know exactly what they will and will not be able to do if they are our executor.
