You don’t know who anyone really is on the internet!

May 31st, 2010

One problem is not knowing who or what you’re talking to while you’re on an internet connection.  On dating sites, you might want to chat with someone of your own age and of the opposite sex, but you have no way of telling whether anyone is exactly who or what they say they are.  If they’ve put a picture of themselves up, how do you know it’s really them?  They could have stolen it!  Then they are not just a liar but also a thief…  Then there is the danger of paedophiles preying on children, Which they could do by pretending to be a child and hanging around where the children are likely to be on the internet – not something they could get away with at all in real life.  You also don’t know if you might be talking to an industry shill – someone paid to pretend to be an average person just posting to discussion forums, but who is actually paid to promote their employer.
