How To Handle a Sulfa Drug Allergy

February 24th, 2010

As a nurse, I talk to patients on the telephone and see them when they come into the office where I work. Sometimes after a patient starts taking a medication, they develop a problem or reaction, and we have to make sure that they are looked after. Last week I treated a patient with a sulfa drug allergy, and she was very worried about what that could mean. The doctor explained to her that there are many antibiotics available that do not contain traces of sulfa, and that she should read all medication labels carefully, and to call us or a pharmacist if she had questions.
